We must receive your email and writing sample by 10 PM EST September 26

Your email and writing are the only requirements. However, we strongly urge all participants to participate in the #SkullWriteV2 prompt during the week of 9/20-9/26. We will follow this thread and use it to inform our selections. Both @achtenwrite and @skullgatemedia will be tweeting out the prompts, so be sure to follow both.

Between 9/27-9/30, we will review writing samples and #skullwriteV2 participants. Criteria is flexible, but we are looking for quality writing with an eye to select a diverse group of contributors.

On 10/1 we will be inviting a total of 24 participants to join us Volume 2.

If you have any questions, please be in touch via email or Twitter! Thanks so much. And good luck! We wish we could accept you all!

Want to Know What You're Getting Into?

Read on for more details about what it will mean to be a contributor to Volume 2!

Interested in Joining?

This is NOT like any other anthology. Contributors will create a shared world together they will use as the setting for their stories. You aren’t submitting a story for us to publish -- you are applying to be part of the creative team behind the book.

A few more details will be given closer to the start, but not many, as we will be creating the world together. But this issue will involve space-ships and ray-guns! Pew pew!

We are interested in ALL styles of writing. Short-stories and flash-fiction but also poetry, journal entries, letters, faux-academic articles, recipes, music scores. We want it all!

What You’re Signing Up For

Before we start writing, you will need to be available to play a world-building, storytelling “game” sometime in mid-late October. You won’t have to commit to specific hours, but you will need to be able to put aside a few minutes over a number of days to take your turn.

We value flexibility, creativity, creative chaos, and fun! Tales From the Year Between is like a cross between a giant game of D&D and improv.

We are NOT a paying market at this point—sorry. That’s our eventual goal but we aren’t to that point yet, so we will not be offering a flat rate or royalties for Volume 2. However, you WILL be published in a professionally produced book. If you are invited to join, your work will be available not just as an eBook or on Amazon, but in print through Barnes & Noble and any other bookseller.

One Last Note...

We value collaboration and creative chaos. So two last bullet points:

  • If you haven’t checked out Volume 1, Achten Tan: Land of Dust and Bone, you should so you have some idea what you might be getting into.
  • Forget about Achten Tan: land of Dust and Bone. Our goal is to not just make a new world, but have a new tone and feel entirely unique.

This is not a traditional submissions process -- you aren’t sending us a story to see if we want to publish it. Rather, you will be applying to be a contributor — if we ask you to join and you accept, you’re in. You’ll get a giant welcome email with all the logistics, you’ll help build the world, then you’ll write something for the final book.
